Paul Downes
BDS MGDS LDS DGDP
General Dental Practitioner, Paul Downes, qualified from Guys Hospital in 1980 and has been caring for patients at Kelvin House Dental Practice, Whitstable, Kent for the past 29 years. The practice has 3 dentists and 2 hygienists. Kelvin House Dental Practice is both a Denplan Excel and a BDA GoodPractice accredited practice.
Paul is a full member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the British Orthodontic Society and is also a certified Inman Aligner dentist.
He is also a Committee member of the British Society for General Dental Surgery.
He passed the prestigious MGDS exam in 1993 and was the Dental Postgraduate Tutor at the Kent Postgraduate Medical Centre for 5 years. He has written articles that have been published in the British Dental Journal, is the author of the book The Internet Guide for Dentistry (now in its second edition) and a Computer Assisted Learning program on cross-infection control for the dental team.
He learnt his orthodontic skills from Consultant Orthodontist, Mr Geoff Webb, while studying a two-year course organised by the British Postgraduate Medical Federation. This was followed by 4 years as a part-time orthodontic assistant at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. Paul has been providing regular 'fixed braces' orthodontic treatment for children and adults for 20 years.
Paul completed the Advanced Dental Seminars one-year Cosmetic Dentistry course in Harley Street in 2005, under the watchful eye of Dr Christopher Orr.
Since then, Paul has developed a particular interest in combining Orthodontics (braces to align teeth) and Cosmetic Dentistry (improving the shape, form and colour of the existing teeth). By doing this, he is able to apply minimally invasive techniques to achieve the right balance between improving the smile and maintaining sound, healthy tissue.
Paul keeps up to date by attending postgraduate courses organised by some of the World's top clinicians. By bringing together his skills in 'social six' orthodontics, tooth whitening, composite bonding and other 'conservative' cosmetic techniques, his aim is to restore the biomechanical, structural and aesthetic integrity of the smile in the simplest way possible.
